Sandy Point State Park is east of Washington DC, off of Route 50 (just before you go over the bay bridge). ~1 hour drive but very popular with scouts, makes for a good first campout for 5thgraders who have just joined the troop.
Amenities
2 sites in a big open field
Water spigots on site
Small pavilion
3 picnic tables
Fire rings
Port-o-johns
Plenty of parking
Other Considerations
Youth group site in a separate area of the park, need to go through entrance gates to get to beach
Site A is closer to the parking lot
Park now requires reservations for all people entering the day use area of the park during the busy season
Limited trails but can walk to beach and go crabbing (can go through gates for free with Youth Group Pass)
Only go swimming in late spring, otherwise there will be jellyfish. Swimming area is large and safe, lifeguards in season.
Dining: There is a Wendy's that is easily accessible on the way to the campground.
Your GPS should give directions (Google maps knows the "Sandy Point State Park Youth Group Camp Ground"), but you can use 1100 East College Parkway, Annapolis.
There is no family campground there, just the youth group site so it’s not well marked once you get in the park.
If you take the last exit before the bay bridge:
At the end of the exit ramp, take a left on to Oceanic Drive.
Continue STRAIGHT and go PAST the maintenance shop, not into the main area of the park.
The gate code is ___, close the gate behind you and keep going to the youth group site at the end of the road.
If traffic is bad:
You’ll get off at Cape St Claire Rd, taking a right after the shopping center and then another right onto East College Parkway.
The road will run alongside the north side of Rt 50 for several miles.
The road will end, take a left onto Oceanic Drive and you’ll be in the park.
Continue STRAIGHT and go PAST the maintenance shop, not into the main area of the park.
The gate code is ___, close the gate behind you and keep going to the youth group site at the end of the road.
